Back then the humans kept calling me Carly. Locked in a cage like some sort of wild animal with nothing but some food, water, litter, and a bed that smelled of previous prisoners. I knew I had to make my escape, but how? Once every evening the humans would let me out along with all the other prisoners. There is only one way out, a door that smelled of freedom and terror. Outside that door lie other humans and their beast companions of all different sizes and temperaments. The other prisoners would be no help, they just wanted to play and socialize, making cute gestures towards the humans on the other side of the transparent wall.
I didn’t realize a couple of those humans would be the key to my freedom. One night when the warden was putting us back in our cages I heard one human on the other side of the transparent wall say, “look at that one there, she looks just like my Bobbie cat I had growing up.” Once all the cages were locked and the door to freedom was opened back up, that human and his human companion approached my cage. I was nervously looking at them, what would they do to me? With soft voices they started calling me kitty and lightly rubbing me being the ears with their fingers through the bars. After a bit they left along with all the other humans as the lights turned off and I was left by myself with just the sounds of other prisoners chatting or crying.
When morning came the lights turned on followed by the humans and the scents of their companion beasts. Little did I know that today would be the day that would forever change my life. The human from the night before and his companion reappeared and started talking to the other humans, they kept saying Carly pointing at me. After a bit it all became clean, these two humans were here to pay my bail and free me from my cage. They packed me into a crate and took me out of that place that I would never return to. This was the first day of my new life.
